Is this a blog, a youtube channel, a podcast, or a subreddit? All and none, hopefully a community. Eventually a movement.
The Angry Generation stems from two opposed facts;
For the average person on Earth, this is the best time to be alive. But for me, in my white, Western, masculine bubble, some things certainly have been better, and other things certainly could improve.
We’re adjusting from a period in the 20th century where economies were growing, technology advancing, relative safety and security (depending on if you were on the right side of global US hegemony), to now. We had the world at our fingertips, and now we have climate change, stagflation, pandemics, suburban sprawl, social media, inequality, AI etc. The world grew so quickly – there was never a moment to adjust to the new harms we must now overcome. Many levers of power grew up in this growing world and seem to always be trying to find a way back to it.
Yes, every generation feels like it is battling to establish itself in a cruel world, but this doesn’t diminish our battle: going from growth-oriented to sustainable living as quickly as possible. We will face hurdles along the way, like millions of young men adrift casting their lot with far-right/alt-right parties in an ode to lost times. Millions more blindly accepting the social contract that forces them to work without regard for their humanity or the end-goal of the work – profit maximisation rarely goes hand in hand with addressing our global issues. And finally, institutions and systems established in by gone eras which are very successful at locking in their modus operandi for generations, but less so at adapting to current and future problems.
The Angry Generation is an attempt to address systemic flaws, identify paths to improvement, and build a like-minded community striving for positive change.
